Sandeeka is a Research Fellow at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Auckland. She began her career as a structural engineer and proceeded to completing her PhD focusing on disaster management. Her PhD research looked at defining the concept of “Building Back Better” (BBB) in post-disaster reconstruction and recovery. She developed a Framework for BBB which is fast gaining recognition worldwide.
Sandeeka currently works on a number of projects funded by MBIE. She is a researcher in the Urban Programme of the Resilience to Nature’s Challenges National Science Challenge looking at urban resilience and the development of city to city resilience networks. Her other projects include Build Back Better analyses of recovery in Christchurch and Fiji, and the development of a Build Back Better Tool. In the past, she has been involved in Build Back Better studies of the Victorian Bushfires Recovery in Australia, Cyclone Recovery in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, and Indian Ocean Tsunami Recovery in Sri Lanka. Sandeeka has worked as a specialist BBB consultant for international agencies such as the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and the Agricultural Development Association, Palestine, and also worked with the University of Auckland’s Urban Research Network to develop a State of New Zealand report for the United Nations Habitat III Conference.
