Ma Jealyn Valenzuela is a Master of Disaster Management candidate in the Department of Civil and Environment Engineering, at the University of Auckland. She holds a Bachelor degree in Nursing from the University of the Philippines and has pursued a career in public health and disaster management. She has worked as a Project Manager at Health Futures Foundation, Inc., a non-government organization which has multiple recovery and rehabilitation projects in Post-Typhoon Haiyan areas in Samar, Philippines.
Jealyn’s research interest focuses on assessing the resilience of a post-typhoon Haiyan area in the Philippines utilizing the Build Back Better Framework and tool. This research aims to evaluate the resilience of the area and contribute recommendations for the further development of the local disaster risk reduction management plan. This also aims to study if the current Build Back Better tool will be applicable to be used by cities and towns in the Philippines and make recommendations for improvement and the possible inclusion of climate adaptation in the tool.
